When we started HYCIDE last year, part of our goal was to feature artists and photographers whose work is global but still complements our mission— creating understanding for people who are often stereotyped or rendered invisible by mass media. That's the main focus of our one-year anniversary issue. There are photos from Newark, India, Puerto Rico, Africa, the Bronx and Brooklyn by artists such as Chester Higgins, Jr. of The New York Times, Henry Chalfant, a pioneering force in the graffiti art movement, and HYCIDE Creative Director Jamel Shabazz. Many of the photographers in this issue illuminate corners of the world where poverty and joy, beauty and desolation, coexist. The artists and subcultures featured here— street dancer Storyboard P, Gigi Bio, Afro-punkers, and rappers from Lagos to Brooklyn—have created art from few resources, finding meaning and inspiration in street life. We will continue to showcase contributors from all over the world in HYCIDE. But in the meantime, here's a preview of issue number four—shots that didn't make the cut, so you can imagine what's inside.
