Photojournalist and filmmaker Akintola Hanif, whose photography and film projects explore the depths of humanity through documentary portraiture, has been featured in such venues as the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, and the Guggenheim Museum, among others. His work has received critical acclaim from The New York Times, The Village Voice, MTV, and others, and he has completed commissions for Prudential, Red Bull, and Starbucks. His photographs are both stylized and unflinchingly honest, capturing the beauty, resilience, and complexity of people and places often overlooked. Hanif continues the tradition of portraying poor and working-class people of color with dignity and truth.

Jamel Shabazz has been documenting urban life around the world for over 30 years. He is a teacher, philanthropist, photographer, and author of multiple best-selling memoirs published by Powerhouse Books including: Back in the Days, A Time Before Crack, The Last Sunday in June, and Seconds of My Life.

PHILLIP SHUNG [PIXOD]
An interdisciplinary designer, creative director, and photographer based in Brooklyn. With over 20 years of experience in art direction, his work blends photography, interactive design, branding, UI/UX, motion graphics, and animation. He is a partner at Pixod [and a founding member of the Bklyn Combine], where he leads visual design strategies across publishing and digital platforms.

SARA YONAS
A creative director and artist whose work spans print, publication, and visual identity. Her role as art director supports HYCIDE’s mission of visually centering Black, Brown, and working-class narratives through thoughtful design and layout. Her expertise ensured the book’s strong visual storytelling through contemporary, intentional formatting that elevated HYCIDE’s visual language.

CARRIE STETLER
A veteran journalist, editor, and communications professional. Formerly a reporter at The Star-Ledger, she went on to become Managing Editor for HYCIDE Magazine and Associate Editor for NewarkBound Magazine. Stetler is currently Assistant Director of Media Relations at Rutgers University–Newark.

A Newark-based multidisciplinary artist, writer, and arts advocate who serves as Arts & Cultural Affairs Director for the City of Newark. She has written for HYCIDE Magazine as the former managing editor and served as a contributing cultural critic for The New York Times.

NORA KHELIFI
A nonprofit operations and development professional with experience building and supporting mission-driven organizations. In her role, she supports executive leadership while contributing to editorial development and communications strategy, strengthening both internal systems and the organization’s public voice.
