Origins & Work

HYCIDE is a media outlet dedicated to stories of survival and freedom, founded by photojournalist and filmmaker Akintola Hanif in 2011. Originally launched as

HYCIDE magazine, it features cutting edge stories highlighting subculture, art and conflict. HYCIDE is an exploration into the minds and hearts of the marginalized and misunderstood.

Programming at HYCIDE XPANSE [arts axis] provides space for wellness and arts education for the community at large.

The Goal

Creating empathy and understanding — and hopefully becoming a catalyst for action in the form of community care, increased opportunities, and shared resources.

The Lens

HYCIDE explores the roles we create for ourselves and those created for us — challenging the status quo while bearing witness to the feared, neglected, and misunderstood.

In Memoriam

In Honor of
Luis Rivera Jr.

In honor of Luis "Louie" Rivera Jr., whose life and untimely death informed my life’s purpose to tell the true stories of the feared, neglected, and misunderstood. Louie was a young person who allowed me to document the intimate corners of his life. He was open, giving, and full of love. In all of my work, Louie's spirit lives on. With great love and respect for the Torres and Rivera families.

Rest in Power, Lou Grab.
