The Mission
Stories of Survival & Freedom
Scroll
HYCIDE is a media outlet dedicated to telling stories of survival and freedom — founded by photojournalist and filmmaker Akintola Hanif in 2011.
01
Origins & Work
Originally launched as HYCIDE magazine with the intention of highlighting subculture, art, and conflict, HYCIDE is an exploration into the minds and hearts of the marginalized and misunderstood.
Featuring cutting-edge stories and art that is insightful, intimate, and intricate — as well as programming that promotes wellness and economic mobility offered at HYCIDE XPANSE [arts axis], HYCIDE aims to ensure that art is not disconnected from community but folds directly back into it.
02
The Goal
Creating empathy and understanding — and hopefully becoming a catalyst for action in the form of community care, increased opportunities, and shared resources.
03
The Lens
HYCIDE explores the roles we create for ourselves and those created for us — challenging the status quo while bearing witness to the feared, neglected, and misunderstood.
Art is not disconnected from community — it folds directly back into it.

THE OTHER SIDE OF FEAR IS FREEDOM
In Memoriam
In Honor of
Luis Rivera Jr.
In honor of Luis "Louie" Rivera Jr., whose life gave us our mission — to help young people find a better way and to show the world how beautiful and diverse the people it overlooks really are. Louie wasn't a statistic or a stereotype; he was a kid finding his way, with a heart rooted in love even while navigating what surrounded him. We carry him with us in everything we do.
Rest in Power, King.
Freedom or everybody dies
